BECE & Admission

What BECE aggregate do I need to get into senior high school?

The minimum BECE aggregate for SHS admission varies by school and program. Generally, you need an aggregate of 30 or better (lower numbers are better). Top schools may require aggregates between 6-15, while other good schools accept aggregates up to 30. Each school and program has specific cut-off points that change yearly based on demand and performance.

How do I apply for senior high school in Ghana?

SHS application is done through the Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS). After writing BECE, you will receive a voucher to purchase admission forms. You can then select up to 4 schools in order of preference. The system will place you based on your BECE results and school availability.

When does SHS admission typically open?

SHS admission usually opens in August after BECE results are released. The process typically runs from August to October. Important dates are announced by the Ghana Education Service (GES) and Ministry of Education each year.

School Selection

How do I choose the right senior high school?

Consider factors like: academic programs offered, school location and accessibility, boarding vs day school preference, school performance and reputation, available facilities and resources, cut-off points for admission, and your career goals. Visit schools if possible and talk to current students or alumni.

What is the difference between Category A and Category B schools?

Category A schools are typically older, well-established institutions with better infrastructure and higher academic standards. They often have lower cut-off points (higher competition). Category B schools are newer but may offer modern facilities and are working to improve their academic standing. Both can provide quality education.

Should I choose a boarding school or day school?

This depends on your personal circumstances. Boarding schools offer full immersion in academic life, structured study time, and independence training, but cost more. Day schools allow you to stay home, may be less expensive, but require reliable transportation. Consider your family situation, finances, and personal preferences.

Programs & Courses

What programs are available in Ghana senior high schools?

Common programs include: General Arts (literature, history, government, economics), General Science (physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics), Business (accounting, economics, business management), Visual Arts (graphic design, sculpture, textiles), Home Economics (food and nutrition, clothing and textiles), and Technical/Vocational programs.

Can I change my program after admission?

Yes, but it depends on school policy and availability. You may be able to change programs within the first few weeks of Form 1, subject to meeting requirements and space availability. Some schools are more flexible than others. Contact the school administration early if you want to make changes.

Fees & Financial Aid

How much does senior high school cost in Ghana?

Government schools are free under the Free SHS policy, but you may need to pay for uniforms, textbooks, and personal items. Private schools charge various fees. Boarding fees (where applicable) cover accommodation and meals. Total costs can range from few hundred to several thousand Ghana cedis per year.

What is the Free SHS policy?

The Free Senior High School policy covers tuition, library fees, science center fees, computer laboratory fees, examination fees, utility fees, and development fees for all public senior high schools. Students still pay for items like uniforms, textbooks, meals (for day students), and personal necessities.

Application Process

What documents do I need for SHS application?

You typically need: BECE results slip, birth certificate or baptismal certificate, passport-size photographs, completed application forms, and any other documents specified by individual schools. Keep multiple copies of all documents.

What happens if I am not placed in any of my chosen schools?

If not placed in your first round, you can participate in subsequent placement rounds. You may also apply directly to schools that still have vacancies. Consider being flexible with your school choices and programs. Contact schools directly or visit their admission offices.
